His Excellency the Governor General in Council, on the recommendation of the Minister of the Environment, pursuant to subsections 27(1.1) and (1.2) of the Species at Risk Actarefers the assessment of the status of the Spring Salamander (Gyrinophilus porphyriticus) Carolinian population back to the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) for further consideration; andapproves that the Minister of the Environment include in the public registry established under section 120 of that Act the statement that is attached as the schedule to this Order and that sets out the reasons for the referral back to COSEWIC.S.C. 2002, c. 29Statement Setting Out the Reasons for Referring the Assessment of the Spring Salamander (Gyrinophilus Porphyriticus) Carolinian Population Back to COSEWICThe Carolinian population of the Spring Salamander, a large lungless salamander, was historically recorded in the Niagara Regional Municipality in southern Ontario. When COSEWIC assessed the Spring Salamander (Gyrinophilus porphyriticus) Carolinian population in 2011, it assigned a status of extirpated to this species because no valid records of it had been documented for more than 50 years. However, since the publication of the assessment, new and emerging information regarding that population has become available that COSEWIC would like to consider in the assessment of the species. Therefore the assessment of this species is referred back to COSEWIC for consideration.
